Spirit of Pryor – 175th Anniversary – Co-Lab® London Dry Gin
This Co-Lab™ has been a closely guarded secret for quite some time. The team at Edward Pryor & Son Ltd, a.k.a. Pryor Marking Technology, approached us in September 2023 to work with them in creating a special gin for their 175th Anniversary. Knowing of this Sheffield bastion of engineering, and manufacturing technology, we jumped at the opportunity, and are very proud to have been asked to get involved.
After several brainstorming sessions to figure out how to bridge between engineering, and booze, we created 7 versions of a recipe, tweaking them into the final rendition. Our backbone of five traditional botanicals embraces a contemporary style using magnolia, hibiscus, rose petal, strawberry, pink peppercorn, and fresh lemon peel.
For the floral notes, we knew we were going to have a short window to forage enough ingredients. Particularly magnolia… similar to feathers, it turns out that when you need a ton (not literally), it’s an awful lot of petals. So in the true “Spirit of Pryor” we sent an e-mail out to you, our customers, as well as all the employees at Pryor, and together we managed to source enough – cast your mind back to March, and April, but this year has not been great for any blossom tree… wind, rain, with not much sun or warmth.
This is an amazing gin, and one we’re really pleased with.
As part of Pryor’s 175th Anniversary celebrations, we were asked to do two tastings… one for their family & friends day, and another for their trade customer, press & dignitary day. We created a Strawberry Collins for the two tastings, using our new Co-Lab. Many of those who attended asked for the recipe, so here it is:
30ml of our Spirit of Pryor London Dry Gin
30ml of fresh strawberry syrup (see below)
15ml of fresh lemon juice
Soda water to taste
Pour the three ingredients into a highball/collins glass full of ice, and top up with soda water.
Stir, and garnish with half a strawberry split on the rim of the glass.
For the fresh strawberry syrup (about 330ml):
200g strawberries
100g sugar
15ml lime juice
15ml lemon juice
15ml water
Purée the ingredients in a blender.
